Land Acknowledgement

The land we farm is located on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe Peoples and whose ancestors signed Treaty 18 with our settler ancestors. We wish to recognize the neighbouring communities of Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash First Nation, now known as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, as the traditional keepers of this land. There is a long history of First Nations and Métis Peoples in Ontario, and it is important to live with respect on this land and to live in peace and friendship today and every day.

As farmers, we recognize that we are part of a large-scale industry – agriculture and food production – that has been and continues to be exploitative of the land and Indigenous Peoples. Organic farming has long centered white, settler, voices, contributions and expertise while appropriating agricultural methods long practiced by Indigenous Peoples.

As settlers, we are aware of the historical and ongoing violence of colonialism. We are farming and deriving income directly from the land; on land that is not ours. We acknowledge this and are committed to learning and listening and doing the work of reconciliation. We are actively reflecting on the following questions to guide our actions:

- What are our obligations to the people who first inhabited this land?
- How do settlers on this land know what their responsibilities are?
- How can we be good guests here?
- How can we support Indigenous self-determination?
- How can our relationships with the land and water, with non-human beings and Indigenous Peoples support future generations?

And we ask this of our community:

Please hold us accountable and grow with us towards justice on the land and in the food system.
