You’re frustrated with grocery store produce, from a country far away, that spoils before you can eat it and tastes, well, not very good.
You understand that when you support a local business, you directly support your community.
You know that when you support a local farm, you are contributing to a more sustainable and secure food economy.
You care about our environment and the food you eat.
You want healthy, fresh, local produce for your family.
We know this, because it’s our story too.
It can be a struggle to find healthy food for your family; healthy food that also aligns with your values. At home, we aim to eat as locally as possible - we want to know our farmers - and as seasonally as we can. We want to make conscious food choices. We try to do our best for the environment and for our bodies. Plus, the cliche, “eat local, think global” has really stuck with us.
Buying local matters.
Local food and seasonal produce is more nutrient dense and it simply just tastes better.
It keeps wealth and jobs within our communities. You directly contribute to helping business owners stay in business - you invest directly in our local economy. And given our current challenging economic climate, this is more important than ever before.
Reduces the fuel necessary to get products from the producer to our homes.
It fosters a connection to your food and the people who grow it, to your community and what it has to offer. Having a strong and sustainable local food network is essential (especially when disaster strikes as we are learning during the current COVID-19 pandemic).
Harvest Moon Farm grows organic, seasonal veggies and we specialize in greens and tomatoes. We also grow microgreens and make preserves using the produce we grow - making it feel like summer can last all year long. We value collaboration, community and education.
Harvest Moon Farm began in 2018 at an incubator farm in West Grey, Ontario (thanks Green Being Farm!). An incubator farm helps to grow another farm business by offering land and infrastructure - it’s like office space for farms! It can be quite challenging for new farmers to purchase land, have access to all the resources needed for farming, and start a business all in one go. Plus, collaboration is at the heart of Harvest Moon Farm. During the 2019 growing season, we rented lands at the Roost Winery in Blue Mountains, Ontario.
Currently, HMF is located on land at Good Family Farms outside Meaford, Ontario. This will be our 3rd year selling at the Collingwood Farmers Market.
So why the name ‘Harvest Moon,’ you ask?
But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night
While our name is definitely inspired by the classic Neil Young song (thanks, Neil!), it is also inspired by an actual late summer evening, watching the harvest moon rise over the fields. Ask us about this sweet moment sometime :)
